Architecture & Design

Thomas H. Althoff spent years trying to find the perfect location for his first London hotel and, once he had found it he wanted to ensure that, like all his ventures, it would become the perfect home away from home. This entailed sourcing a designer who could truly express the same individuality, luxury and attention to detail the Althoff Hotel Collection has become synonymous with.

Anne Maria Jagdfeld is a leading interior designer famed for her work with countless exclusive private residences around the world as well as her involvement with Berlin’s Adlon Hotel, China Club and the Japanese embassy. Jagdfeld’s style is noted for its sophisticated and relaxed luxury; its intelligent blend of traditional and modern; and its discreet but distinctive flair which supports her dictum:  ‘No elegance without personality.’

Personality is certainly evident at St James’s Hotel and Club and AMJ has taken its inspiration from the hotel’s distinguished past and nobly proportioned Victorian architecture.  This dramatic nineteenth-century townhouse has been reinvented to capture the feel of an esteemed gentleman’s club combined with the comfort and professionalism you would expect in one of the most prestigious townhouse hotels in London.

The palette throughout is a subtle spectrum of soothing neutrals, with a strong period flavour. Taupe and olive, cream and black, chrome and steely grey have been given added drama with flashes of jewel-like gold, copper and aquamarine. The materials are as sensuous and indulgent as the colour scheme. Marble and velvet, silk and leather, cashmere and lacquer glisten and shimmer beneath the carefully orchestrated lighting.

Meticulous attention to detail is consistent throughout the Collection, and at St James’s Hotel and Club every piece of furniture and every metre of fabric - from the Murano glass chandeliers to the walls lined with Loro Piana cashmere - has been carefully selected to suit the location and the exacting standards of the clientele.

St James’s Hotel and Club boasts an outstanding collection of 20th-century paintings. The Rosenstein Collection, dating from the 1920s- 1950s, includes fine examples of Impressionist, Expressionist and Cubist work from all over Europe, which guests can enjoy in the hotel’s public rooms as well as in the privacy of their own suites.

Every room at St James’s Hotel and Club is both beautiful and practical. Rooms are fully equipped with the latest technology, including flat-screen television, wireless internet connection, I-pod docking stations, VDA multi media system and are fully air conditioned. Some of the rooms have balconies and small terraces, offering the unique opportunity to enjoy outside space in London.

In the heart of one of London’s most wonderful and diverse neighbourhoods, close to exclusive Mayfair and just a stroll away from Piccadilly and the finest shopping and entertainment in the West End, St James’s Hotel and Club offers the ultimate sanctuary: a five star home away from home in one of the worlds most exciting cities.
